OAO Off-Road Rider Skill Rating

1. Beginner

Description:

  • No or Limited prior experience with dirt bikes.

Skills covered in an OAO Beginner lesson:

  • Riding on grass or flat open area.

  • Introduction to bike parts and safety gear.

  • How to turn the bike on and off.

  • Basic controls, using throttle, brakes, and clutch.

  • Basic mounting and dismounting practice, 

  • Basic body position.

  • Initiating movement, introduction to gear shifting.

  • Riding in a straight line and learning basic turning techniques.

2. Novice

Description:

  • Limited or occasional experience riding a dirt bike.

  • Starting to gain confidence on the bike.

  • Developing basic riding skills and control.

Skills covered in an OAO Novice lesson:

  • Riding on grass and introductory tracks or trails.

  • Improved starting and stopping without stalling.

  • Better control of acceleration and braking.

  • Straight-line riding at different speeds. 

  • Better control in basic turning ability, introduction to tighter turns.

  • Improved gear shifting with regard to timing and smoothness.

  • Body position with introduction to riding while standing.

3. Intermediate

Description:

  • Growing confidence and proficiency in riding.

  • Developing more consistent and proficient control and technique.

Skills covered in an OAO Intermediate lesson:

  • Riding on Easy-to-Intermediate-level tracks or trails. 

  • Comfort with various speeds and terrains.

  • Practicing maneuvers to develop proficiency in navigating obstacles.

  • Riding through simple obstacle courses.

  • Refining body position, shifting and control in different terrains, while sitting and standing.

4. Upper Intermediate 

Description:

  • Very skilled and confident rider.

  • Proficient in various riding techniques and terrains.

Skills covered in an OAO Upper Intermediate lesson:

  • Expertise in handling different terrains (sand, mud, gravel).

  • Excellent control on inclines and declines.

  • Precise cornering and braking techniques.

  • Handling larger or more complex obstacles.

  • Introduction to wheelies, stoppies, jumps.

5. Advanced

Description:

  • Highly skilled rider with confidence on a variety of challenging terrain.

Skills covered in an OAO Advanced lesson:

  • Navigating highly technical terrains with greater speed and control.

  • Further developing proficiency in advanced maneuvers like wheelies, stoppies, jumps.

  • Steep inclines or declines.

  • High-speed turning, braking and shifting exercises.

  • Pushing the reasonable limits of speed and control in various environments.

6. Expert

Description:

  • An exceptional, professional-level rider, with mastery in extreme techniques and terrain. (Read that again! 99.9% of our attendees are NOT experts, so this likely means you. Our lessons are categorized between Beginner through Advanced, as described above.)

Expert Skills:

  • Elite-level control on the most technical terrains.

  • Perfecting highly advanced riding techniques.

  • Pushing the boundaries and limits of speed and control in various environments.
